Democrats: Cleaning Up Republican Messes Since 1933

This section of the website will explain a number of key issues that highlight the major philosophical differences between the Democratic Party and the current Republican Party, as well as issues on which the Republicans have been spreading lies and distortions. We have pages regarding Federal Spending during the G.W. Bush and Obama Administrations; the increases in the National Debt; and the facts about job losses and gains under the Bush and Obama Administrations. We also have focused on the issues of Social Security, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act of 2010, because Republicans are targeting these three major Federal efforts which are critical to protecting the elderly and disabled, and to provide affordable health care for everyone. Republicans have a long-standing goal of privatizing or dismantling Social Security and Medicare, and they have vowed to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Republican Goal: Rule by the Very Rich

It is apparent that rule of our economic and political life by the greedy rich is the goal of the current Republican Party. They want lower taxes on the very rich, with no taxes on capital gains and dividends, which is the primary source of income for the very rich. They want to remove even modest government restrictions on bankers and others who use and abuse other people’s money for their own benefit. They support unlimited political spending by corporations and the very rich, to give them more control over our government. They vow to take away the remaining small ability of labor unions to protect the interests of the middle class. And they are working to restrict and discourage voting by the poor and the elderly, to help ensure Republican victories.

It is clear that the very wealthy already have undue influence on our economy and our politics. Efforts by President Obama and Democrats in Congress to protect the rights of the 99% and reverse the concentration of power in the hands of the greedy rich have been met with total resistance by Republicans in Congress. And they are not satisfied with their current exalted position. They want a free hand to implement their vision of an America where “greed is good” and the winners rule.

Republicans claim to want a much smaller government, but when we look at the details, the only things they want to reduce are regulations that restrict the damaging behavior of corporations, and programs to help the poor and the middle class. Rather than reducing government, they propose to increase military spending above current inflated levels, and they are intent on increasing the role of governments in telling women what they can do with their bodies.

If rule by the greedy rich is not your vision of America, vote for Democrats, at all levels of Government.

"Obama Spending Binge Never Happened"

Market Watch, an online publication of the Wall Street Journal, recently published an article that starts by saying: "Of all the falsehoods told about President Barack Obama, the biggest whopper is the one about his reckless spending spree." The article then provides data showing that spending during the Obama Administration has risen at the slowest pace in decades. This is shown in the chart below:

You can see the real spending numbers, by year, on our charts in our Issues pages, by clicking here. These numbers confirm that there has not been a spending binge under President Obama, and that Republicans have been spreading lies and distortions about Federal spending and the National debt under the Obama Administration.

Facts About Federal Income Tax Rates and What the Wealthy Really Pay

Do you wonder why this country suddenly "can't afford" to maintain or expand our roads and bridges, and we "can't afford" to continue to provide Medicare coverage for those age 65 and older, and we "can't afford" to provide financial assistance so lower income people can have health insurance coverage, and we "can't afford" to support research and development on clean energy, etc. How were we able to afford to fight World War II, and put men on the moon, and build the interstate highway system, and develop the internet? Have we suddenly become a third world country? The answer is very obvious when we look at Federal income tax rates from the 1930s to the present. Tax rates have been cut dramatically from what they were in the 1940s through the 1970s, starting with large cuts in rates under Reagan, and again under G.W. Bush. And the biggest tax cuts were for those with the highest income.

Republicans like to proclaim that the wealthy are paying most of the Federal income tax, even at the current low rates, and that lower income people pay little or nothing. If we focus only on Federal personal income tax, this claim has some validity, but if we look at all taxes paid, at all levels, the very wealthy are paying about the same percentage of their income in taxes as paid by lower income Americans. This is shown in an excellent study by Citizens for Tax Justice. Read the CTJ report by clicking here.
